I found a strange forest with broad leaves obscuring the sun. The ground, starved of sunlight was clear of undergrowth. Poles like a grove of bamboo grew toward the light. Large pods of beans dangle from the canopy as gigantic squash pushed toward the sky. A grave stone marked the scene with an epitaph, "Here lies a golden hybrid."

The scene above is the view inside my round fiber bag. It did remind me of the climax forests of Malaysia, crowded at the top and bare at the base. What I was looking for was the fauna of my garden climate.

I had set up a "critter-cam" using a Nest Camara.

The camera is powered through a USB plug. Attached to a mobile battery pack, it becomes a portable critter cam. Using WiFi, the camera records to the cloud and creates sequences when motion is detected.

I tried the camera in a couple of locations in the garden. The "forest" featured at the top of the post was pretty empty of fauna. No elephants, bears or lions, but I did see a sowbug walk across the screen. I have been luckier in other locations, such as this Willis H. O'Brien inspired dinosaur eating small creatures (ants).

Sometimes the camera becomes part of the story. In this video, the lizard does not like the invasion of its territory and performs a threat display. Note the swollen body to make it look bigger.

Anyone know the type of lizard?

The reptiles are not necessarily the top predator. In this video captured by my critter-cam you can see a lizard is the meal of a Greater Roadrunner.
